Privacy Policy

Iroiro Japan ("we", "us") is an educational website and app that helps people travel around and settle into Japan. This policy explains what information we handle when you use our website (iroirojapan.com) and app. In short: you do not need an account, we do not show ads, we do not sell your personal data, and most of what you enter stays on your own device.

Information we collect

Most features work without personal information or an account. If you voluntarily use an Iroiro Learn research or feedback form, we collect the contact address and research answers shown on that form for the stated validation purpose.

The limited information we may process is:

  • Anonymous usage analytics — basic, aggregated events about how features are used (for example, which page was opened or which language was selected), so we can improve the content. We do not use this to identify you, and numeric inputs such as salary are grouped into broad ranges rather than stored exactly.
  • Calculator and planner inputs — values you type into the salary calculator, PR calculator, or trip planner are processed on your device to show you a result. They are not sent to or stored on our servers.
  • Feedback you send us — if you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to write.
  • Learn validation forms — your email address, preferred language, approximate JLPT goals, study routine, consent choices, and form responses. Weekly cohort check-ins use a private participant code stored only as a one-way hash.
  • Standard technical data — like any website, our hosting and security providers may process basic request data (such as IP address and browser type) to deliver pages and protect the service.

How we use information

We use the limited information above only to operate and improve the service: to show calculator and map results, understand which guides and tools are useful, keep the service secure and reliable, and respond to feedback you send us.

Cookies and analytics

We aim to use privacy-friendly, aggregated analytics. If analytics through Google Analytics is enabled on a given deployment, it may set cookies and process data under Google's own privacy policy. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

Data stored on your device

To make the app convenient, some features save data locally in your browser or app storage — for example, your trip planner selections so they are still there when you return. This data stays on your device and is not transmitted to us. You can remove it at any time by clearing the app's or browser's storage for this site.

Third-party services

We rely on a small number of service providers to run the app:

  • Hosting and content delivery (Vercel), which serves the website and app.
  • Supabase, which stores educational content and privately stores Learn validation contacts and responses.
  • PayPal, which processes the founding-cohort deposit. We store only the minimum private transaction reference and verified status needed to confirm a commitment; we do not receive payment-card details.
  • An analytics provider, as described above.
  • These providers process data only to provide their service to us, under their own privacy terms.

Data sharing

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it for advertising. We may share information only with the service providers listed above so they can operate the service, or where we are required to do so by law.

Data retention

Aggregated, anonymous analytics may be retained to understand long-term trends. Emails you send us are kept for as long as needed to respond to and follow up on your message. Data saved on your device remains until you clear it.

Research data for people who do not join the cohort is deleted or anonymized after six months. Cohort research and check-in data is deleted or anonymized 12 months after the cohort ends. Payment and accounting records may be retained separately where law requires.

An automated scheduled cleanup applies these periods. After research expiry, retained accounting records no longer link to the contact or cohort participant record.

If a cohort completion date is not recorded, a safety limit removes cohort identity and research no later than 18 months after the participant record was created.

Children's privacy

The service is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your choices and rights

Because we do not hold accounts, you can use the main service without providing personal information. Learn research contact is optional and marketing consent is a separate, optional choice. You may ask us to access, correct, or delete your validation response by contacting us below.

International users

We operate from Japan, and our service providers may process data in Japan and other countries. By using the service, you understand that data may be processed in locations outside your own country.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Significant changes will be reflected on this page.
